The layout is still going, but very slowly. Most of my posts have been on Facebook, since it is a lot easier to post over there. Hope everyone is being safe in this pandemic that seems it's never end. My teaching job is even tougher than normal and it's more work than it's ever been. So you can see that spare time is very rare these days. Here is a diorama that built last week for a train show last weekend. It was the first show we've had since February. The diorama was built to highlight my buddy, Greg McComas's line of HO products. His MAC rail products has many products including the EOT's and flags for the ends of trains. Make sure you check out his line of products and tell him that Shannon sent you! Google for MAC Rail Products or copy and paste this link: macrailproducts.com

Shannon Crabtreehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01124471814344440953noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5087937776850177386.post-10612779800732941012020-01-20T16:02:00.001-08:002020-01-20T16:02:38.375-08:00Winter Timonium, MD show in 2 weeks!

Its that time of the year on the east coast for train shows. The Springfield, MA Amherst show is this weekend and then Feb 1st & 2nd We have our Great Scale Model Train Show in Timonium, MD. While I've never attended the Springfield show, the GSMTS is a whole lot closer and I'm on the staff. Our October show was one of the biggest Fall shows EVER and looking like this winter show is going to be huge show and thousands of people through the doors. Hope to see you there and as always, I'll have my excess for sale right behind the entrance doors at Makin' Tracks.

He was going to send my a free one to try if I'd do a review on it. The soldering iron is not just an ordinary iron but a wireless one. It is the Iso-Tip Quick Charge Cordless Soldering Iron Kit: Model #7700. I didn't even know they made wireless ones and if they did, they'd be expensive. So I got it from him very quickly and I actually had several soldering projects to do, mainly decoder installs. All I can say is wireless is the way to go. No more getting that cord caught on corners or knocking over things on your workbench. It's hot within 10 seconds and cools off quickly. Best of all, you don't have to worry about it getting left on. The push button control works perfectly. It comes with 2 soldering tips and you can order just about any type.

I highly recommend this soldering iron because it easy to use and definitely affordable. It would work even better on soldering track wires due to the cordless feature. I actually have to use it on some new feeder wires on the layout real soon. Glad I have this now. I will never go back to a wired one again.
The Great Scale Model Train October show is the biggest in the Mid-Atlantic. Show hours are 9-5 on Saturday and 10-4 on Sunday. The weather looks perfect for a train show that weekend, fall like and a little rain! Hope to see you there next weekend! I'll be headed up on Thursday afternoon to staff the show and help my buddy Mike at Makin' Tracks. Virginia Midland Shops will be selling extra cars and locos there. Make sure you stop by and say hello.
That only means one thing: model railroading season is upon us! It's that time where we get back into the swing of projects or pick up where we last left off on some. It also means train show season too and if you know me, I'm a regular with the most of the shows in the Mid-Atlantic area with Makin Tracks. We have the our Great Scale Model Train Show (north of Baltimore) coming up in 3 weeks too. This ironically it is our next show.
We had a great meet and we heard nothing but good things on the few changes we did this year. We had over 150 people take part in the meet in some shape or form and we are hoping to have even more next year. The original founder, Norm Wolf even flew in from Utah to check it out. I've uploaded my pics for the meet and as I have done for all of them, posted on my Pbase account. For details on the 2020 MARPM, check out www.marpm.org
He lives over in Madison County to the west and models the D&H in the late 1960's. After a relaxing hour ride over, the crew was treated to an excellent lunch and ops started right after that. I visited Chris's layout for a tour after a James River NMRA meet a couple of years ago, and the stars finally lined up to operate on it. His layout is in his spacious basement and only takes up about half of it. Very relaxed atmosphere by the crew of 8 and lots of laughs. I've done a few op sessions in the past but this was my biggest one yet, plus it had a dispatcher and operated by track warrants. All new to me but made it realistic to run a railroad. Thank you Chris for the invite and a great Wednesday afternoon running trains.
But want to keep my faithful & patient followers updated. The last post talked about some new power for the layout. A few more posts ago, I revealed the desire to backdate the layout. So I have been doing some purging of cars and locos in order to get to around 1987-88. So all CSX patched cars are gone and most graffiti is not out and about. Of course those were thrown into my excess pile for train shows and several sold just yesterday at a smaller show. I also purged some of my loco projects and those also sold easily yesterday. I will continue to do this until I get down to a only a few projects. It seems that when I have several projects going on at the same time, that's a turn off for me. That makes it a challenge of even walking into the layout room to get anything done.

So Spring Break this week for me. I hope to get a few more things done and hopefully a post or two!
Finally had a weekend to sit down and do some sound installs. I prefer the Tsunami 2's over ESU/Loksound at this time. I think they sound about the same but prefer the T2 with the plug-in for their Current Keeper. This gives me reliability in the sound on dirty tracks. So, since I have backdated the layout some to about 1988, I've got some older power on the layout. Not that I didn't have older power already! I've always wanted to provide a history on the layout too. Older paint schemes and patch out schemes tend to be the norm on the Midland. So instead of having new logos and paint schemes, I'm looking for older ones and ones that could just make do.
Calling for 6-10"+ in my immediate area. So looking forward to some snow days next week to get modeling done. It's been a crazy past week with a sick son (stomach problems that come & go for the last 9 months) and my wife cracking a tooth. Hopefully this coming week is less eventful. So I'm going to enjoy the snow and get some modeling done in this snow break! Updates will be posted!
It tells me whats going on out there when the train traverses levels. After Thanksgiving, my camera quit working. No idea why and I tried to bring it back but to no avail. It was a $30 camera I got on sale at Harbor Freight when I put the helix in. I replaced the camera with two cameras, at different angles. One monitors the garage and the other the helix. The cameras have long wires to connect them to my monitor/TV in my layout room. Running those though walls and up the layout was the most tedious item of the install. I finally installed the "corner wire hider" yesterday. It hides the extension cord and video wires of the camera. Needs some more paint and it's done.

Today it's off to Virginia Beach for the a train show down there. This break hasn't involved much model railroading this year due to shopping, dishwasher install on Christmas Eve and of course family time. Hoping to fix that trend in 2019 and the few days next week. Stay tuned!
This is my 300th post to this blog and sometime over this week, I went over 200,000 views on the blog. Pretty neat and thanks for check out my blog to make this happen! Not a whole lot happening on the model railroad in the last month. I've been helping out my buddy Mike at Makin' Tracks: www.makemytracks.com with train shows and we've had the Timonium show on which I posted about. We also did a show in Virginia Beach and the following weekend did the Neuse River show in Raleigh, NC. So you can see why it's been tough to get a blog post done or do anything on the railroad. We pick back up in December and a show list is below.

I did just complete some cars for a client so I'm clear sailing on the layout now. At the Raleigh show, I did have the chance to witness the enormous Sipping and Switching modular layout. It was neat to see so much railroad under one rather large roof!

Also, hope to post during the few days I have off next week but have a great Thanksgiving and be safe in your travels!
The main thing I have been contemplating is a possible back date of the layout. How far you may ask? I'm thinking the mid 1980's. I'm currently in the early 1990's. Why would you backdate it? That is the magical question isn't it? One reason is to possibly get older cars on the layout. Another is to get some older locomotives on the layout. I've grown on F units in the last year and would like to still have them living out their last days on the layout. A good friend of mine is a F unit fanatic. That doesn't help either. I also want to incorporate a few of the Kadee PS-1 50' boxcars too. I think it is a great transitional time in railroading. I have even been "floating" around a way to add a car float to the layout!

What's has to possibly change?

The track work is fine for this change. The industries would have to be examined but I think most are fine. I'll have to look at some of the freight cars that might be too new for the era. Of course, I'll have to buy a few new cars like the PS-1 50 footers but when did 40' boxcars quit showing up in the 1980's? Vehicles seem to me like one of the biggest time setters on the layout. I'll have to look at each and figure out which can stay and which will need to be sold. Vehicles for the 1980's are already a black hole. Not much is out there. Locomotives will also have to be looked at. Most of my power is older but a 1984 short line would not have a SD40-2. Still would have a lot of 1st generation Alco's and EMD's. That fine with me! This would let me incorporate the F units on to the layout. A RS-3 in VMID paint would be a nice touch. My GP10 still would be OK on the layout.

This is a easy attainable change for the layout. Not a whole lot of work. But is it worth it? I don't know yet. More research is need and I'll talk to a few other people about it. But its definitely an easy change to do! Let me know what you think in the comments!
